The Game

Never look for a record deal just go ahead and release your own music and wait for record label’s to approach you to sign you up and license your music from you. Never wait to be booked for gigs. Go out and hire venues and put gigs on yourself. Put on an album tour and find and hire venues yourself. “Just do it” like the Nike advert says! Don’t play by their rules! Play by your own rules! If you can’t get your music out there, do your own retail.

When starting out send your music for review in demo sections of music magazines especially dance music and then when you’re ready to release your first single after getting good feedback from your demo’s, release a white label version of your first single and send it out to DJ’s to play on the radio and in clubs etc. Also, send it to people for inclusion on DJ mixes and music compilations to help get you more exposure.

You can also consider submitting your music to playlists. If you wait around to be discovered and to sign a record deal you risk wasting your whole life and wasting a lot of time as A&R people tend not to make much effort in discovering new acts and great music. It’s not what you know. It’s who you know and about being in the right place at the right time. A lot of your success will boil down to luck most of the time.

I advise you to play the game as they call it. Don’t sit around waiting for success to come to you or chasing after deals. Just get your music out there yourself and put gigs on to promote it. If it’s in huge demand, the offers will start pouring in and people will approach you. There isn’t a lot of money to be made in the music business and it’s not that easy or straightforward trying to sell it either. So, don’t get your hopes up too much and that way you won’t be too dissapointed when reality hits home. Just do music for the love of it. Never have great expectations otherwise you’ll end up feeling let down as a result of chasing that elusive dream!
